Stourbridge BID - Lower High Street Underpass

Stourbridge BID is proud to be able to deliver a meaningful addition to another underpass, Lower High Street - Underpass. The artwork was commissioned and organised by Stourbridge BID and funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Created by local artist Cal, the piece reflects his distinctive style inspired by naval dazzle camouflage. Similar works by Cal the artist can be found throughout the town and highlighted on the Stourbridge Art Map. The design pays homage to the rich industrial heritage of Stourbridge, particularly its world-famous glassmaking tradition and the iconic Stourbridge Blue. Drawing inspiration from Cubism, Vorticism, and the bold geometric patterns of naval camouflage, the artwork combines sharp angular shapes and vibrant colour.

With the help of our partner, Alex Goodger, Stourbridge Glass Museum Director,  We were able to echo the forms of cut glass and industrial design, creating a striking composition that also conceals a hidden word within the design. Celebrating colour, craft, and creativity, this piece blends traditional heritage with contemporary artistic expression — a modern tribute to Stourbridge’s history of glassmaking and manufacturing.
